Canvas offers API access tokens, which are unique alphanumeric strings that act as a digital signature to let external software programs communicate with the Canvas Learning Management System, typically via the Canvas API.
Requesting an Access Token
All CWRU faculty, staff, and students may request a Canvas access token, in accordance with the Canvas API Access Token Procedure. To request a token, submit the access token request form.
Receiving the Access Token
If your request for an access token has been approved, an access token will be generated for you. You will need to approve the app integration and receive the token string before you can use it.
Approving the App Integration
- Log in to Canvas, select Account on the Global Navigation menu, then choose Settings from the menu.
- In the Approved Integrations section, locate the new token that has been created for you. You can easily find the token by looking for the “pending” label in the Status column. Select the activate link.
- The token will activate; you will need to refresh the page to see its status update to “active.”
Receiving the Access Token
A member of the Canvas Admin team will reach out to you with information on how to retrieve the access token string for use with your application.
