OpenVPN Connect Connection Guide for Windows and macOS

CloudConnexa OpenVPN  for CWRU Students, Faculty, and Staff only

CloudConnexa (formerly OpenVPN Cloud)  provides remote users with secure VPN connections to the campus network via a SSL encrypted tunnel. OpenVPN Connect client software requires users to authenticate using Duo Two-Factor Authentication in order to establish a VPN connection to the University network. If you have not already enrolled in Duo Security, visit https://webapps.case.edu/duo/webauth.py.


 

CloudConnexa OpenVPN Connection Guide for Windows and macOS

This guide walks you through downloading and installing the OpenVPN Connect client on Windows and macOS operating system. Depending on whether you have a University-managed device (managed) or not (unmanaged), please follow the appropriate instruction below to download and install the OpenVPN Connect client. If you have any issues, please contact the helpdesk at 368-HELP for further assistance.


 

Download & Install OpenVPN Connect on university-managed device

Download OpenVPN Connect through Company Portal

  1. Open Company Portal App:
    1. For Windows:
      1. Open the Start Menu and type "Company Portal"Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
    2. For macOS:
      1. In Finder, open the "Go" menu, and select "Applications"
      2. In the Applications folder, open "Company Portal"Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  2. Launch “Company Portal” app and then search for OpenVPN
  3. Click the OpenVPN icon then click on Install on the next screen.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. Skip to the “Opening OpenVPN Connect for the first time” section below

 


 

Download & Install OpenVPN Connect on unmanaged device

Download & Install OpenVPN Connect through a web browser

  1. Open a web browser
  2. Go to https://openvpn.net/client/
  3. Verify the installer is for your operating system and click download.
  4. Install the OpenVPN Connect VPN client using default settings.
    • For macOS: Choose appropriate processor during installation

  5. Open the “OpenVPN Connect” app
    1. For Windows:  Start Menu -> type OpenVPN Connect -> Select OpenVPN Connect to open
    2. For macOS:  In Finder, open Go menu; select Applications; In the Applications windows, double click OpenVPN Connect
  6. Skip to the “Opening OpenVPN Connect for the first time” section below.

 

Opening OpenVPN Connect for the first time (Importing OpenVPN Profile)

  1. Open OpenVPN Connect
  2. Click Import Profile button
  3. Retrieve OpenVPN Profile by entering the server URL
    • URL:     cwru.openvpn.comUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. Click Continue then click Sign In on the next screenUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  5. This will open your web browser and redirect you to the Microsoft website to complete
    the single sign-on process with your Case ID(e.g. abc123@case.edu), Passphrase and
    DUO Two-factor authentication.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  6. After you authenticated successfully, choose the appropriate “Region” near your location
    on the next screen (e.g. Columbus(OH) ) and click “Continue”Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  7. Your web browser will re-open the OpenVPN Connect app.  (Allow your web browser to open the OpenVPN Connect app if needed.)
  8. After returning to the OpenVPN Connect app, click the “Confirm” button to confirm
    importing the OpenVPN profile.

 

Establishing a Cloudconnexa (OpenVPN Cloud) connection

  1. Open OpenVPN Connect app
  2. Click the “Connect” button associated with your OpenVPN profile.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  3. This will open your web browser and redirect you to the Microsoft website to complete
    the single sign-on process with your Case ID(e.g. abc123@case.edu), Passphrase and
    DUO Two-factor authentication. (Note: You may not be prompted to authenticate when
    the web browser opens if you were previously logged in within a few hours.)Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  4. When connected, the OpenVPN Connect client will show the appropriate status..Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

 

Disconnecting Cloudconnexa (OpenVPN Cloud) connection

  1. Open OpenVPN Connect app
  2. Click the “Disconnect” button to disconnectUploaded Image (Thumbnail)
  3. If you see the “Ready to Connect” message, you have been disconnected.Uploaded Image (Thumbnail)

 

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Ensure your Internet connection is active.
  • Verify you have correct network ID and password
  • Restart OpenVPN Connect app and try again
  • Remove and reimport OpenVPN profile
