WSOM - Solver and Opensolver in Excel

Below are instructions for users in the Weatherhead School of Management (WSOM) to install Solver and Opensolver software in Excel.

*Note: Users must be connected to Case wired network, CaseWireless network, or Case VPN.

Installation Instructions

  1. Browse to http://opensolver.org
  2. Click "Download & Install"
  3. Scroll down, and find "Download the OpenSolver Linear zip file", Click the link to download
  4. Click "Save as" and save it somewhere easy to find (e.g. Downloads)
  5. Once the download is complete, either locate the zip file or just click "Show in folder" within Microsoft Edge
  6. Right click "OpenSolver2.9.3_LinearWin.zip", Click "Extract All..."
  7. Click "Extract"
  8. Within the extracted folder, locate "OpenSolver.xlam". Right-Click and select properties. Then check the box "Unblock". Click Apply, Then OK to close the Window.
    1. Warning: Not Unblocking the file will result in errors or the OpenSolver add-on wont launch at all.
  9. Open Microsoft Excel. Click "File" Tab
  10. Click "Options" on the lower left
  11. Click "Add-ins"
  12. Click "Go..." at the bottom of the dialog box
  13. Click "Browse..."
  14. Locate "OpenSolver.xlam" in the extracted files you download. (e.g. "Downloads")
  15. Click "OK"
  16. Ensure "OpenSolver" is checked. Then also check "Solver Add-in" and any other add-on's you wish to add.
  17. Click "OK"
  18. On the Data ribbon to the far right, you will now see the OpenSolver add-on, along with any other add-on's you may have added.
