Licenses Supported at CWRU
Tableau Server
The Tableau Server is a secure portal that allows dashboards created in Tableau Desktop to be securely shared with other university staff from any browser or mobile device. It is a hosting platform where you store all of your Tableau dashboards, visualizations (also called workbooks or sheets), as well as data extracts that feed these visualizations. The CWRU Tableau Server is installed on an Amazon Web Services cloud instance and is managed by the Office of Data Management, Analytics and Visualization.
Tableau Viewer
A Tableau Viewer license is for university employees to access university data and analytic insights to perform their job functions. This may be for routine operational tasks, compliance, or decision making across the institution. Viewers, when logged into the platform, access content that has been created by others. All CWRU employees have a Viewer license for our enterprise Tableau server (data.case.edu). If you believe you should have access to one of our other data portals that serves Student Health Services (healthdata.case.edu) or the School of Dental Medicine (dentaldata.case.edu), please contact our office for a consultation.
Tableau Creator
A Tableau Creator license allows individuals to create content that can be shared by publishing to a Tableau Server. This license type provides access to the Tableau Desktop application, Tableau Prep, as well as a connection to a CWRU Tableau Server to securely publish and share your analytics insights with others at the university. Tableau Creators connect to data sources, clean and merge data, design visualizations and dashboards for other to view and interact with. It may also include aspects of data governance and permissions modeling as well.
Employees that might be interested in a Tableau Creator license are business analysts, researchers, data engineers, finance analysts, or anyone that is interested in any type of data analysis. If you would like a license or consultation, please submit a help ticket.
Tableau Prep Builder
Tableau Prep Builder is a drag and drop interface designed to make preparing your data easy and intuitive. Analysts can use Tableau Prep Builder to combine, shape, and clean your data for analysis in Tableau and without altering your source data or requiring coding languages. Individuals that have purchased a Tableau Creator license can also download and use Tableau Prep Builder with the same license key.
Salesforce CRM
Salesforce CRM Analytics (formerly Einstein Analytics or Tableau CRM) is only available to Salesforce CRM users at the university. Salesforce CRM license allows users to gain actionable insights and AI-driven analytics right in their Salesforce workflow and platform. Tableau at CWRU
CWRU maintains three separate Tableau Servers for the university business needs depending on the controls and restrictions required for different data types to meet security and compliance regulations. For the enterprise server, we require (in most cases) data to be copied into the enterprise data lake if dashboards are designed for production and use in operations or decision-making (see diagram below). This allows performance in native systems to be maintained as well as security.
